Web-Based Energy Management Platform

About the Client

The client is a US-based SaaS company operating in the facility management and energy technology sector since 2002. The company helps large building owners identify hidden energy-saving opportunities and implement data-driven strategies aimed at reducing utility costs and improving operational efficiency.

USA

Objective

The client wanted to transform its existing application into a more powerful energy management platform by expanding functionality, integrating real-time external data sources, and enhancing the overall user experience. The ultimate goal was to strengthen the product's market position and help building owners make more informed energy management decisions.

Solution

When the client engaged Altabel, the project began with a comprehensive assessment of the existing system. The team analyzed the application architecture, reviewed the source code, and conducted an in-depth database analysis to identify opportunities for modernization and performance improvements.

Altabel developed a new data processing layer, refactored the business logic layer, and implemented functionality for managing equipment, events, contacts, and other operational entities across both frontend and backend components. To improve navigation and data accessibility, the team introduced an advanced search capability with a tag-based building classification system. A seamless authentication migration was also implemented, allowing users to move from the legacy platform to the modernized solution without disruption.

To improve scalability and responsiveness, Altabel optimized the server layer and developed a dedicated caching service.

As the platform evolved, the team extended its capabilities by integrating real-time and contextual data sources, including:

  • Historical energy consumption patterns
  • Weather conditions and weather normalization
  • Seasonal variations
  • Occupancy loads
  • Operational building dynamics

These enhancements enabled energy professionals and facility operators to gain more accurate insights into energy performance and support sustainability initiatives.

The solution includes an interactive energy efficiency dashboard that is updated daily and provides a consolidated view of energy usage across individual buildings or building portfolios. Threshold-based monitoring allows the system to generate immediate alerts when abnormal or unscheduled consumption spikes are detected, helping organizations respond quickly and improve utility management.

One of the platform’s key modules is Project Management, which provides a user-friendly interface accessible from desktop and mobile devices. The functionality includes:

  • Gantt charts
  • Task and milestone tracking
  • Calendars

In addition, the platform delivers detailed financial and efficiency reporting capabilities, allowing users to evaluate the impact of energy conservation initiatives over customizable reporting periods. Altabel is also supporting the platform's global expansion by localizing both the legacy and modernized versions of the application to support approximately 90 languages.

Result

The platform evolved from a legacy energy management application into a comprehensive web-based solution that combines operational management, real-time energy analytics, reporting, and project management capabilities.

The enhanced platform enables building owners and facility managers to make more informed energy decisions through integrated operational, environmental, and consumption data, while providing a scalable foundation for future growth and international adoption.
