About the Client

The client is a Germany-based IoT connectivity and software provider founded together with Deutsche Telekom AG.

The client serves users worldwide and supports common mobile communication standards including 2G, 3G, 4G, and NB-IoT. Its products are used across a broad range of industries such as asset tracking and logistics, fleet telematics and automotive, healthcare, hospitality, smart buildings, smart cities, smart farming, and other connected-device ecosystems. In today’s market, this positioning remains highly relevant as enterprises continue to scale connected fleets, remote assets, industrial telemetry, and embedded connectivity services across multiple regions and regulatory environments.

Objective

The objective of the cooperation was to strengthen the client’s internal team with highly skilled engineers who could support both current and upcoming projects in software development and DevOps. The engagement was not limited to one isolated initiative. Instead, Altabel’s team contributed across several projects related to IoT connectivity, telecom infrastructure and cloud-based service delivery.

Solution

Altabel's dev team has been providing software development and DevOps support for the following projects:

  • Project related to the Mobile-Telecom domain (IoT) to provide Internet access to Smart Things. The goal of the project is to replace one of the expensive components of the mobile-telecom stack (previously being received from the client’s vendor) with its own component developed from scratch in order to ensure the commercial benefits of the final product (namely, a SIM card with the Internet, tariff plan and the maintenance for smart devices).
  • The TISP platform that provides an in-car WI-FI hotspot via mobile connectivity to the OEMs' customers (BMW, Volvo, Daimler) and devices in the car. In the case of Daimler (DAGNA), there are also applications included in the car's head unit that use the B2C data connection such as TuneIn Internet Radio. Today the service is available in Europe and North America. Different OEM offerings require variations of the base product implementation and separation of services due to specific requirements, data security and privacy reasons.
  • SIM cards and Internet connectivity platform that is stateless (state delegated to Redis) and scalable. In 3GPP topology should be located between SGSN (SGW) and GGSN (PGW). It gives the ability to dynamically redistribute traffic to different packet gateway nodes while looking as a single GSN to external systems. The software stack meant to be deployed in AWS cloud infrastructure using Terraform scripts (infrastructure as a code). The platform also handles GTP-C and GTP-U and supports GTPv1 and GTPv2.

Result

The projects were completed successfully, and the cooperation created enough value for the client to return periodically with new requests for experienced specialists matching the required technical skill set. Although the original case does not provide quantitative KPIs, the business result is clear: Altabel became a trusted engineering partner for ongoing and upcoming initiatives in a complex IoT and telecom environment.
